This photo shows members of SANE (National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy) demonstrating in front of the White House in 1964. The posters urge President Johnson to follow the agreements of the Geneva Accords, to remember his commitment to domestic anti-poverty policies, and to resist all wars, not only the war in Vietnam. SANE was founded in 1957 in response to the Cold War nuclear arms race. Members supported worldwide disarmament and a nuclear test ban. By the mid-1960s, anti-nuclear groups such as SANE had turned their attention to the U.S. war in Vietnam. Swarthmore College Peace Collection
