There’s Something Happening Here:
Music of the Vietnam War Era

Press play to listen to clips of 34 popular songs from the Vietnam War era, which embody the deep connections between music and the time period. Some of these songs were written during the war specifically to address the conflict or the era’s social turmoil; others simply tap into the intense emotions of the time. For many Americans today, this music evokes experiences and memories of the wartime era.

Vietnam veterans interviewed for the book We Gotta Get Out of This Place (2015) identified 20 of these songs as favorites. The others are hits from the period that represent a range of responses to the war.
